Vista + WLM Error Code 81000306
I don’t use Vista at work and at home, there isn’t enough time to check emails (family+study) let alone chat. But if you use Vista and WLM and see this error code, here is a cool fix. Will serve as a reference for me as well.
- Click start
- Type: cmd (but don’t hit Enter)
- Right-click cmd.exe when it appears under Applications
- Click Run As Administrator
- Type the following: netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
- Press enter
Then just sign into WLM; you don’t even have to reboot.

THANK YOU!! I almost regretted spending thousands on a new computer for this one simple problem!
What exactly is it that causes the problem and what does the fix do?
Does it adversely affect anything else?
June 21st, 2007 at 8:43 am
@Matt,
Problem could be because of performance auto-tuning in Vista.

I found this post by Christopher on the http://computerbits.wordpress.com/2007/02/14/vista-auto-tuning/#comment-8860 website
Re: Christopher Says:
May 5, 2007 at 8:44 pm
I have found that setting autotuning to HIGH also corrects the problem:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=high
After setting autotuning to disable i was still unable to connect to the .Net Messenger Service. This was the only solution that worked for me so thank you. So try setting autotuning to HIGH it might work for you too if DISABLE doesn’t. I’m running Vista Ultimate with Norton 360 as my firewall program.
March 30th, 2008 at 6:42 am
I tried all of teh above suggestions…and I still can’t connect.
I’m running Vista, Messenger Live and direct DSL connection.
Any suggestions or websites?

I’m using Windows Live Messenger 8.5 on XP SP2 at work and Vista at home. I have two Windows Live accounts and I’m able to login fine using one of them but I get 81000306 error when I try the second account. It was working fine for months until today.
I’m thinking it’s something on M$ side.
April 17th, 2008 at 5:54 am
All of a sudden I’m able to connect now. I didn’t change anything, just tried again after some time and it connected without any error.
April 19th, 2008 at 9:36 am
Could someone please suggest anything…running Vista, MSN worked fine forever. One day it stopped working. 8000306. No Microsoft webpages can load. (Hotmail, MSN, nothing). Tried clearing everything, removed certificate authentication stuff, tried the autotuning thing…basically tried everything on these boards short of reformatting. I use MSN for work purposes and it’s frustrating to not have it on my home computer as well…please help.
Any ideas at all ?

Like Marz said. Setting the autotuninglevel to HIGH solved my problems too…
Im on vista with the latest version of WLM too and Norton 360. I set the Norton Firewall to Allow for the WLM app.
I guess if all other vista users do this, it should work!
(It was actually me who posted the message above. I wrote Marz for some reason, hahah.

hi alpesh, many thanx for fixing my problem with error code: 81000306. i now have a problem with 2 codes that show up on the same windows live messenger box….
error code 80048820
extended error code: 80048439
i have googled it,and they say to readjust my date and time, both are correct, but i changed them to a different time then changed them back to the correct time and date… im still having the same problem, some people say its to do with my MTU which is set at 1500 at the mo,they say i should correct it to 1400… but i dont know if this is correct or even how to do this… please help, many many thanks for your time and patience in showing us how to fix our small and somrtimes very large problems…. lee

Excellent thanks
February 23rd, 2009 at 2:50 am
Yes it worked! I tried to disable and it worked sometimes, but was intermittent. If disabling (as written above) does not work, try netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=high then exist and re-start messenger ..
March 3rd, 2009 at 7:31 am
fix didnt work, in fact, when i did sign in thru the online windows live site, once i started chatting lots of problems including curosr clicvking into start menu and obviously under some one or something elses control.
very worrying, not i have changed my password, and my laptop client is stuck in auto sign in with old password.
my problem IS EVEN WORSE

thanks a million… i have been searching for a solution that works for a couple hrs and yours did the trick. Just had to leave a message to show my thanks
March 28th, 2010 at 7:52 am
Great stuff on here. But there may be a simpler solution. A Registry Cleaner was the key for my problems to be solved and prevented. I mean I got a free DL and scan (most offer a free down load and scan)and from there it showed me what was up in my system and solved it. They constantly scan your system and fix the things that are going wrong, in turn preventing errors and headaches. Its a pretty good solution for such a mess of an error, or atleast I think so.
