Tweaking Guides: Windows Vista & Windows XP

IT’s Free! Grab a copy of the TweakGuides Tweaking Companion written by Koroush Ghazi of TweakGuides.com

Designed for novice and advanced users alike, it is written in plain English to help you genuinely understand all aspects of Windows and your PC. The guide covers every major topic, from the correct installation of Windows and critical drivers and software, through to recommendations for every significant setting and feature, all the major performance and convenience tweaks and customizations, as well as detailed troubleshooting advice. There are also links to a range of reliable free applications for optimizing and maintaining your system, as well as to important resources for finding out even more about Windows and your PC.

Regular vs. Deluxe Edition: The Regular Edition of the TGTC is completely free and can be downloaded further below. I’ve released the TGTC for free because the information in it can help a lot of people, and it would be petty of me to force people to pay for it. However hundreds of hours of my spare time have gone into compiling and maintaining these guides, and continue to do so. If you find the guide useful please consider purchasing the Deluxe Edition of the TGTC, which comes in PDF or hardcopy book form. It has several enhancements including pictures, higher DPI text and full bookmarks but really the main reason to buy it is if you want to support my work in creating and maintaining these guides.

Free Virtual Hard Drive/Vault software with On the Fly 128-bit encryption for Windows Vista

If you don’t have Windows Vista Enterprise or Ultimate Edition then you are missing out on BitLocker Drive Encryption – a data protection feature of Vista.

SecureAction has released CryptoExpert 2007 Lite edition, a freeware software for Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit that provides similiar functionality as BitLocker Drive Encryption and allows you to create Virtual hard disks with 128-bit encryption and drive letters on your computer. The files in the drive can be accessed as if from a regular hard drive.

Main features of this application include:

-Using powerful encryption algorithm to encrypt your data: CAST 128 bit
-Ability to create encrypted containers (files vaults) up to 20 Megabytes in size
-Access to your files on virtual volume on the fly
-Mapping any free drive letter like G:, F:, K: for virtual volume
-Requires password authentication before the files become accessible
-Works with all Windows application – even DOS applications

Hack: Windows Mobile Device Center

If you are using Windows Vista and have a Windows Mobile device, you need Windows Mobile Device Center, which is ActiveSync for pre-Vista users, with additional features I am sure. These applications are used to synchronize files and information between the handheld device and the personal computer, laptop, tabletpc.

When you launch Windows Mobile Device Center you will see a generic image of either a PocketPC or Smartphone. This can be changed. Yes, thats right. You can customise that.

How?

Replace the sync.ico in c:\users\(your username)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\(your profile key)\

Replace the sync.ico in Windows directory of the device.

Make sure you are not connected via the cradle. Need to be offline.

Delete the device from Windows Mobile Device Center.

Place the device on the cradle and add your device.

Done!

All this made possible by Michael Railing. He has kindly shared icons for various devices.

What do you think? How cool was that? Your opinion matters. Rate this post :-)
