Frankarr was here!

If you are an Aussie, into IT, and don’t know FrankArr then what can I say?

To write on FrankArr is like doing a thesis. He is Australia’s (how can I vouch for other other countries) #1 Aussie Microsoft Blogger!

He is ultra cool and a big twitterite!

To say the least, Frank Arr has dropped by my blog on Sunday and I would like to know what he thought of this blog and what’s missing and what’s cool? :-)

Thank you FrankArr!

I am sure techtalkblogs brought FrankArr here!

TechTalkBlogs is FrankArr’s baby and aggregates almost all IT bloggers from Áustralia, including mine ;-)

Its from here that Microsoft Australia Technet Flash newsletter team picks up 10 blog posts to feature every month. And for last couple of months I have made it couple of times! Which ones you may ask? Well I’d dig for the archives and will post them here sometime next week!

So FrankArr what brought you here? :-) I bet it was catchy headline? What was it? Did he subscribe to my RSS feed?

I follow FrankArr on Twitter and so does he! We are twitter mates! Looking forward to meeting FrankArr in Gold Coast this year at Tech.Ed 2007!

Twitter Mobile Application for Nokia/WM5

FrankArr and other twitters you may want this, if you are on unlimited data-plan like Abdul, save money on sms! Use Twitter and Flashlite!

Abdul Qabiz has written an application that updates the status message on twitter using your Windows Mobile 5 based Smartphone or Pocket PC and some Nokia phones.

Basically this application updates the status messages through the mobile client via GPRS/3G internet connection from your ISP. No need to send an sms!

This makes sense if you are unlimited-data plan. I believe Abdul is making good use of Airtel in India. I had the luxury of using Airtel, when I was traveling to India last year. It sure rocks to have cheap or unlimited data plan for GPRS/3G connection.

Download the SWF application here

This application requires FlashLite 2.x which can be downloaded from here

Scheduled backup of pocket pc

I have an iPaq and it serves me well :-) It was my best companion when I was in India.

My worst nightmare… when the device hangs (rarely)… and on restart (after removing the battery and putting it back) it starts afresh!!! eeks!!!

Especially when you are away from your workstation and cradle.

Lucky me, I had the trust cert for Outlook Mobile Access on the SD Card.

So the point to note : backup – backup- backup. Manual. Yes. So what’s the big deal? In this day and age of automation… you need to be smart and fast ;-) So? At this stage, a search on Google for scheduled backup of pocket pc, did not really help.

So, I found this amazing treasure on my pocket pc 2003.Follow these steps and ensure that you SD card has enough space to backup – whatever you choose (just like in ntbackup.exe). Shall we start… aw come on!!!

Ok…

  1. Start
  2. Programs
  3. iPAQ Backup
  4. Options
  5. Switch To Advanced Mode (On selection, it will scan your system)
  6. Just like ntbackup.exe – it will show @ root PocketPC and then
  1. My Documents
  2. Email
  3. Personal Databases
  4. System Data
  • Make your choice(s)
  • Click on Options
  • Select Scheduled Backup ( other choices like PIM Mirroring can be useful and dangerous – useful: Restores PIM after device has been reset, so backup or no backup – you are in business. Would have helped me, if I had known this before and also if I didn’t have SD Card with me; dangerous: if you loose your PPC, you are a loser!!!
  • Select Scheduled Backup and take your pick – Once, Daily, Weekly
  • When? Where?
  • Restart device when complete.
  • That’s it! I backup my PPC daily at 0000 hours… :-) I am happy! You should be too!!!

I don’t have WM5, so don’t know how different the steps are. Surely somewhere it would be better. I even installed a Virtual Network and WM5 Image in an emulator, but could not see option for backup!!!

If you have WM5, can you check out this feature and leave your comments?
