HowTo Install Forefront Client Security On Your Demo Server

I had this interesting conversation at Microsoft Tech.Ed India 2011 in Bangalore last month and one of the topics was on installing anti-virus on virtual machines or standalone servers that were to be used for SharePoint 2010 demos, testing, development, etc.

This is very interesting because up until last few months, I have to admit that all my demo virtual machines had no anti-virus software installed. I could not install Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows Server 2008 R2, so what options I had?

I downloaded Forefront Client Security from Microsoft TechNet/MSDN [en_forefront_client_security_x86_x64_cd_x13-62435] and extracted the Client folder which also has a subfolder for x64 from the ISO to my main server at home. Then every time I build a new environment or a server, I connect to the client folder and from the x64 sub folder, I run the clientsetup.exe with /nomom switch. Using /nomom switch means this is a standalone (unmanaged) instance of the client.

That’s it! You now have anti-virus software installed on your server! However, that’s not enough. You will need to download the updates manually regularly. In my case, I run Windows Update Server, so updates are taken care of automatically for all my virtual machines and laptops that join my home network.
